Recently my husband and I, along with our two sons ages 5 and 3, hopped on a plane from Calgary and headed down to Sayulita for a little winter getaway. The town was chosen as a wedding site for my in-laws; at first I was a little apprehensive as we had never traveled with our kids anywhere that wasn't in a resort setting or at least 10 minutes away from a Wal-mart. But it was important that we be there and Canadian winters are harsh so we decided to go for it.

I knew recreation for my boys wouldn't be a problem as they love playing in the sand, and there's lots of it! The beaches here are amazing. Not only are they beautiful with their golden color, the main beach is vast and although I was a little concerned that the surf or undertow would prevent my kids from enjoying the ocean, the water is very shallow and while we were there the waves were calm and my kids could easily splash around without concern from us. Toward the end of our vacation the surf did pick up and we needed to watch our kids a little closer but the upside was they enjoyed boogie boarding on the waves. We also spent time at La Playa de Los Muertos which is located just west of the main beach. It's a bit more secluded and there are no boats so it's also a little quieter. Both beaches were practically deserted in the mornings which was perfect for our family as my kids were so excited to get to the beach each and every day that often we would head over following our morning coffee. Most (if not all) of the swimming pools are not heated which I found a little cool but my kids enjoyed, and often we would end our days at the beach with a quick dip.
