When we were getting ready for this trip, one of our boys said "I can't wait until we get to go out for breakfast and order eggs." We do eat eggs at home, but something about ordering them from a restaurant while on vacation appealled to him. We make big plans for amusement parks and big experiences, but it really is the little things that they remember.

1) Stopping to take in the little moments. An hour ago we found a tiny gecko on our patio wall. We brought all the kids quietly out to see him. Then, a cruise ship just made its way out to sea past our resort. They were so excited to watch and take pictures of the huge lit up hotel on the water. These are little things they will remember.

We have traveled as a couple, traveled with our kids on our own, and traveled with our kids and other, like another family or grandparents and other family members. There are pros and cons to each of those situations. On this trip, we have traveled to a place where we have freinds to visit, another family with two boys, whose ages are not quite the same as our boys. This other family is spending much of our vacation with us, which is great.

The thing about traveling with another family is that you usually do it because the adults would like to travel together, not because it works out well for the kids. If you are really lucky and plan well, it can make the trip better for the adults and the kids. The key is generosity. Give a little of your time to what the others want, and vice versa. Let the kids from one group choose one activity, and the kids from the other group choose the next. You will not find consensus every time, but you can experince some fun new things you may not have tried on your own.

We are on our way to our Winter destination of choice this year, Florida, USA. 4 suitcases, 5 carry-ons, 3 DS games, one DVD player, 5 cameras and this new iPad. Posting on this is an experiment for me, so we will see how it goes. I will be trying to update frequently with travel tips and disasters, not that I am predicting any travel disasters. For now, here we are at the gate waaaaay too early. (Got to the airport 3 hours early as suggested by the airline, and no lines in customs or security. Murphy's Travel Law.) Lucky for me, our gate is right beside  Starbucks!

I didn't fly many times as a child. But once I was in my teens, I learned to love being on a plane. Afterall, the plane was taking me somewhere far away from home, and that is just plain exciting! Before I had kids, I sat back on flights and relaxed, read a book, listened to some music. Ah...I am on my way.
